What are CGI scripts, can I use them and, if so, which ones?

(This article only applies to you if you have a BT Openworld website.)

CGI scripts are small applications which sit on the web server and are retrieved and executed remotely by your web pages. They allow you to include functionality in your website that would not otherwise be possible using HTML.

Below are three which you can use in your pages:
  • Guestbook
  • Web Counter
  • Web Form to Email
At present, we do not allow customers to write (or upload) other CGI scripts because of potential security problems.

A badly-written or malicious CGI script could be used by unscrupulous persons to 'hack' into our servers, causing damage or deleting valuable data. The scripts which we offer are thoroughly checked to ensure security.
