What do I need to consider before I move my web site from BT Openworld to GeoCities?

(This article only applies to you if you have a BT Openworld web site.)

Before deciding to move your web site, you should think about:
  • The size of your site. With BT Yahoo! you have up to 115MB available for your web site: 15MB for HTML pages (ample for at least 20 pages), plus your additional 100MB for photos and online storage which may be linked to from your website. The BT Openworld web space is 50MB for everything, so if you have a BT Openworld site with more than 15MB, you may need to alter it to start to make use of your newly available online storage.
  • CGI scripts. You won't be able to run the BT Openworld CGI scripts on the GeoCities server, so you'll need to replace them with the GeoCities equivalents.
  • Your URL. As your URL is going to change, you may lose some visitors unless you can redirect them to your new URL, eg with this line of code (you'll need to enclose it in "<>" marks):

meta http-equiv="refresh" content="[number of seconds to wait before redirecting]; URL=[yournewGeoCitiesURL]"
