To set up a news account please follow the instructions below:
  • Launch Outlook Express
  • Click Tools then Accounts
  • Select the News tab
  • Click Add and select News
  • Enter your name as you wish it to be displayed within the newsgroups. Some people use their real names and some use nicknames, this is entirely the users preference.
  • Click Next
You will then be asked to enter your email address. Please note that many 'spammers' use search bots to pull email addresses from newsgroups and so you may wish to enter your email address as something like the following: user@REMOVETHISBITbtopenworld.com
  • Click Next
You will then be asked for the name of the news server, which should be entered as news.btopenworld.com (You should not tick the box 'My news server requires me to log on')
  • Click Next
  • Click Finish
  • Click Close on the accounts window
If this is the first time you have set-up this account in Outlook Express then you will be asked "Would you like to download newsgroups from the news account you added?"
  • Click Yes
The list of newsgroups that are available through the BT Yahoo! Internet news server will then be downloaded. Please be aware that this can take some time, as there are lots of groups available.

You should then:
  • Select which groups you wish to subscribe to from the list by clicking on the required group to highlight it then click Subscribe. Repeat until you have selected all the groups you want.
  • Click OK
  • Click Synchronize account and all of the posts to these groups will be downloaded into your account.
You should see your news account appear underneath your email account on the left-hand side of Outlook Express. This will have an icon of a yellow square with a red pushpin sticking out of it.
