What does ADSL stand for?

ADSL stands for Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line

The word 'asymmetrical' means that the service is designed to have a higher data transfer rate in one direction than the other. The higher data transfer rate is assigned to the downstream direction where you are receiving data from the internet. In other words, with ADSL, you can receive information much faster than you can send it.

The system is configured in this way because most people use the internet to browse, download, and receive data, rather than send it.
