What is a modem?

Print this page

A modem is a device that enables data signals to be sent and received over ordinary telephone lines.

The word 'modem' is actually derived from modulator and demodulator, which is the electrical process the modem carries out to send and receive your signals. An ADSL modem is a special type of modem designed to send and receive broadband data.

Simple modems will generally be connected to your computer using the Universal Serial Bus interface, generally referred to as USB. More complex modems that often allow several computers to share the same broadband connection may be connected via an Ethernet connection. USB modems generally do not require an external power supply as they receive the power they need from the computer's USB port.

The modem provided with the BT Yahoo! Broadband with modem service is a SpeedTouch 330 USB modem.
